Teenager Jason McGovern who died after he was assaulted on a night out in Omagh.

A 19-year-old man is the latest to be arrested by detectives investigating the murder of Co Monaghan teenager Jason McGovern who died after he was assaulted during a night out in Omagh earlier this week.

The 19-year-old was arrested on Thursday evening. Earlier on Thursday a 17-year-old was arrested as part of the ongoing investigation. They joined an 18-year-old who was arrested in connection with the murder on Wednesday night. A 21-year-old male also arrested on Wednesday night was released on police bail on Thursday afternoon.

On Wednesday police confirmed they had launched a murder inquiry into Mr Govern’s death. The 19-year-old  from Tydavnet who had been enjoying a night out in the town before he was assaulted, was found dead in bed later on New Year’s Eve. He had been out socialising with friends when he was punched several times in the John Street and Kevlin Road areas at around 2am on December 31.

An urgent meeting of Omagh’s Policing and Community Safety Partnership  took place today (Thursday) to discuss the murder which came during a particularly violent Christmas and New Year period.

A meeting of Omagh District Council, scheduled to take place on Wednesday evening, was adjourned as a mark of respect to Mr McGovern.
