Derg’s Sommer leaps to bronze in Cardiff

RISING star Sommer Lecky has rounded off a remarkable athletics season by capturing a richly deserved bronze medal in the high jump at the SIAB Schools U17 Track and Field International in Cardiff at the weekend.

At 14 the talented Castlederg girl was by some distance the youngest competitor in a star-studded field that included the cream of the crop from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

But against all the odds the young Ulster and All Ireland schools champion produced another mesmerising performance to claim third place on the podium with a sensational jump of 1.68 metres.

In fact, at one stage Sommer was firmly in the mix for gold before she was nudged down the pecking order by the experienced English pair of Abbie Ward (gold) and Hanna Tapley after failing by a whisker to clear 1.71metres.

The Strabane Academy student though had made a significant impact in her first schools international and her outstanding performance yet again sets the prodigious talent apart as one to watch in the future.

In claiming bronze Sommer managed to edge out her Irish team-mate, friend and great rival Ciara Deeley.

The north Tyrone girl’s latest success capped a marvellous season and came hot on the heels of striking gold in the All Ireland Juvenile Championships the previous weekend.
