Beragh Swifts are through to their second Mulhern Cup Final in four years after defeating Strule United in this evening’s semi-final at Ferney Park.
An early Micheal Brown goal proved enough to send Swifts through to the May 12 showpiece against the winners of Strathroy Harps and Enniskillen Athletic.
This evening’s last four clash was one of few chances as Beragh, beaten finalists against Enniskillen Town in 2014, ultimately shaded the verdict.
Swifts opener apart there was little to write home about in the first half.
Just 10 minutes in Craig Breen from wide on the left clipped a superb ball over the top, Brown controlled first time before steering a low shot past Niall McCrory in the Strule goal.
Thereafter United gave as good as they got without really testing Beragh stopper Jordan Newell while at the other end Swifts threatened sporadically with Stephen Browne twice drawing saves from McCrory.
Beragh lost Breen to a hamstring injury in the first minute of the second haf and moments later Brown should have done better than shoot straight at McCrory.
McCrory then flapped at a Kyle McKane free kick but Kevin McAleer was on hand to clear the danger.
At the other end Ronan Taggart had a half volley charged down following a Ryan Prichard free kick before the Strule skipper headed wide from a corner.
United threatened again when sub Conor McCullagh just failed by a whisker to get on the end of a probing ball from John McPeake.
Moments later a mix-up in the Strule defence gifted Brown the opportunity to score a second but McCrory produced a fine save.
McCrory was also doing his bit at the other end. Twice in the dying minutes the Strule netminder went close with headed efforts but Swifts held on to get the job done.
