TWO of Tyrone’s most promising young athletes will represent Northern Ireland at this year’s Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas.
Castlederg high jump sensation Sommer Lecky and gifted Dunamanagh cyclist Adam Ward were both named in the Northern Ireland team yesterday (Wednesday).
Lecky is rated as one of the best young athletes in the UK and Ireland and at the weekend the Finn Valley club member set a new Irish record by jumping 1.82metres.
The Strabane Academy pupil is an Ulster and Irish Schools champion and has already competed at the European Youth Olympics.
Ward, too, has been producing some eye-catching performances in recent times and had a year to remember in 2016.
As a member of Omagh Wheelers, Ward, recorded a number of impressive wins including a first international victory in Belgium.
The North Tyrone pair are among 18 athletes from the North who will be competing at the Games which will be staged at Nassau from July 18 to July 23.
Ward will be joined in the cycling team by Harvey Barnes from the East Tyrone club.
Previous competitors who have taken part in the Games include Jessica Ennis-Hill, Geraint Thomas, Michael Conlan and Carl Frampton.
