An iconic image of Omagh Accies celebrating becoming Ulster Champions has spread around the world this week.
The champagne moment captured by local photographer Sandra Armstrong was selected by Nikon to be used as part of the Japanese camera giants 100th anniversary celebrations.
Sandra’s photo of the local rugby club has now been included alongside 99 other astonishing images for a Nikon video that went live to the world on Tuesday afternoon, being viewed 1.6 million times (and counting) on the Nikon Facebook in only two days.
These range from portrait’s, landscapes to historic moments in time that depict the theme ‘celebration’.
Sandra’s chosen image captured the moment of elation when the Accies 2nd XV and 1st XV came to together to both celebrate being crowned league champions on the final day of the season in March.
Sandra said, “It’s a favourite photo of mine as they had worked so hard to get there and the inclusion of the Watterson Cup makes it even more special. One of my memories from the day is the lovely moment when the cup and bubbly were set at the side of the pitch in anticipation of the win.
“It was a lovely photo. The press photographers were all in front and I got this image from behind the celebrations as I was walking away. It was one of those spur of the moment photos that always makes it more interesting.”
“The Nikon competition was a celebration of their 100th anniversary and they were looking for photos reflecting the theme of celebration. The Nikon video is set to a ‘This is our Time’ track so it’s so appropriate to the Accies win that day. I am just delighted this picture capturing this great moment of celebration for the club has been included.”
Sandra, who is an avid rugby fan, has been a regular presence on the Accies sidelines with her Nikon D800 spanning back several years, with her son Freddie a player for the club.
She only received notification on Tuesday morning that her picture had been selected and within a matter of hours it was being seen by thousands of people all around the world.
However, this is not the first time Sandra has taken the Accies international.
She explained, “A photo I took of a Towns Cup match of the Accies against Ballymena in 2012 was picked up by a Chicago advertising agency. They were looking a really muddy picture from a rugby match and came across a couple of scrum photos I had taken. You get many wet muddy days in Omagh so there was a few to choose from. They have now been used in sports bars throughout America and Canada so some Accies players may see themselves sometime on a wall in an American bar.”
