New local choir encouraging young people to ‘Just Sing’

Local music tutors Grainne Kirke and Gerarda McCann have launched a new musical venture for local schoolchildren – the ‘Just Sing’ junior choir which will have its first
rehearsal on September 11 in Omagh Library.

EXPERIENCED local music teachers and performers – Grainne Kirke and Gerarda McCann – are inviting students from Year 6 to Year 12 to come along and join their ‘Just Sing’ junior choir based in Omagh.

Grainne and Gerarda have been involved in music all of their lives and are currently tutors for the EA Music Service, delivering the highly successful Musical Pathways to Learning scheme in Tyrone and Fermanagh schools.

Grainne has worked with a wide range of school and church choirs over the years both as a conductor and accompanist, helping children from as young as three-years-old to find their singing voices and develop their musical and social skills.

Gerarda has performed in China, Romania, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Now based in Tyrone, Gerarda performs a wide range of vocal styles, and balances this with her teaching in the community.

Together Gerarda and Grainne are excited to share their dream of providing young people in Omagh with the chance to come together and… Just Sing!

Grainne said, “We know from first hand that singing can bring so much fun and joy to our lives – and singing together with others has even more benefits for young people in helping to develop confidence, self-esteem and bring people and communities together.

“There is such a wealth of talent in Omagh schools, and we want to build on the great work that’s already being done, as well as giving an opportunity to those young people who haven’t had as much experience.

“All students from year 6 to year 12 are welcome. No audition is necessary – simply turn up, register (a termly or yearly fee is payable) and sing!”
