Mayse sets himself season target

Ryan Mayse and his team-mates celebrate

RYAN Mayse has set himself a 15-goal target with Dungannon Swifts this season.

The winger scored his second of the season to help clinch victory over his old club Ballinamallard on Saturday.

And the 23-year-old is already aiming to beat last term’s tally.

“I scored 10 times last season with Ballinamallard and I am aiming to surpass that this season,” he said. “I’d like to get to 15 this time around.

“I’ve a slightly different role at Dungannon. Last season the manager told me to stay out on the wing. I wasn’t really allowed to roam.

“This season Rod (McAree) has given me a different role with a bit more responsibility to get on the ball and create more chances.

“Hopefully the chances will come and the goals will come.”

Mayse scored the second in a comfortable 2-0 win over Ballinamallard, finding the net with a fine individual effort.

Earlier, Ryan Harpur had put the Swifts in front with a close-range finish.

It was Dungannon’s third straight win in all competitions, following victories over Ards and Newry City in the League Cup.

McAree believes his side’s improved defending was the platform for Saturday’s result.

“It’s three wins on the bounce and, importantly for me, three clean sheets,” he said.

“It is surprising that we get three clean sheets because we were conceding goals earlier in the season far too easily.

“I think we looked much tighter and were very good defensively.

“We could have done more going forward today but I always say if you can stop the opposition from scoring you have a much better chance of winning the game.”

GAVIN Dykes will make a decision on his future as manager of Ballinamallard United Football Club next week.

FORMER Ballinamallard United attacker Johnny Lafferty has signed for Dungannon Swifts.
