Outrage at attack on Greencastle’s Our Lady statue

AN attack in which the word  ‘whore’ was painted on a religious statue in Greencastle, has sparked widespread outrage and disgust.

It is understood that the statue of Our Lady was targeted by vandals on Saturday night, who used red paint to desecreate the religious symbol.

By Monday morning, almost 900 people had posted comments of condemnation of the attack on Facebook in response to the image posted by the community group Greencastle Community Voices.

“Residents are understandably furious about the condition of the statue that was the main focal point of recent prayer services and parades,” said the group.

“It is unbelievable in today’s society where religious tolerance is such a vital element in a shared future that this level of hatred is still present in a sick minority of people.

“We have no idea who was responsible. What we do know is that we do not need despicable individuals like these coming into our area if their only aim is to provoke and intimidate the people of Greencastle.”
