Find someone who cares

I came across a really good quote from Teddy Roosevelt recently. It said ‘People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care’.

I stumbled upon this statement when I was in the process of planning for the new year and it just summed up everything that my coaching is about. It’s doesn’t matter how much you know or think you know, it’s about caring for others to help them reach their goal.

This is something you should ask yourself if you are seeking a personal trainer, gym membership or attending classes. How much does that person or facility care for me? You might find the most qualified trainer out there or train at the best facility in the world but if you are more interested in showing off what you know or have, then you need to ask yourself is it really going to benefit you in the long run?

Find somewhere to train that appreciates the fact that you decided to choose them or their facility to train at. I’m not talking about showering you with gifts and free hugs, but a simple smile or even if they ask how your day was, shows a level of care.

Every person’s goal is different and it’s the individual themselves that make it different. You and your friend may both want to lose weight but may have to go about it in different ways. Maybe you work night shifts, have a family or struggle eating some foods. If you are with a trainer paying for a one-to-one service and they just hand out generic programmes that have the same meal plan for everyone, then I would question how much care and effort they put into each individual.

Finding and working alongside someone who cares will really bring the best out of you. It just doesn’t have to be a personal trainer, it could be a close friend, partner, family or even another gym member. If you train with people who care, then you know that the information they are giving you is because they want to see you succeed. It’s up to you how you use all this information.

When others care about helping you reach your goals it does a few things.

Firstly, it makes you more motivated. If you know someone has your back when you are striving towards your targets, then it gives you that extra bit of support to help you push on, especially when the going gets tough. You will also care more for others and yourself. Since it makes you feel good then you are more than likely to pass that good feeling onto someone else. You will also start to take more care of yourself and have a heightened sense of self-worth.

This is why I believe anyone can coach, and a good coach can coach anything. If you have a passion for helping others, then use that drive and determination to do so. If you want to help people achieve their goals and help yourself in the process, then go for it. Don’t let anyone stop you and tell you, you can’t. Get out there and seek the right qualifications and experience so that you can help better yourself and the people around you. Above all take care in what you do.
