‘Don’t be denied your vote’ – Begley

Sinn Féin candidate in the Westminster by-election, Órfhlaith Begley, is urging people in the constituency to ensure they are registered to vote in time for polling day. “The right to vote was hard won in the North so it is very important that people ensure they do not allow that right to be taken off them,” she commented. “Thousands of people across the North have been taken off the electoral register by the Electoral Office over recent years. This was often done without their knowledge and there have been many instances during recent elections where people turned up at the polling station only to be told they were not entitled to vote.

“That is completely unacceptable and an issue that Sinn Féin is constantly challenging and as we seek the introduction of online registration. Therefore, I would urge people to check if they’re on the register and, if not, to get registered as soon as possible. When the date of the election is announced, voters should also check if they will be able to vote on the day. If there are circumstances
such as medical procedures or holiday plans, that prevent this, they should apply for a postal or proxy vote. I cannot stress enough the importance of exercising your democratic right to vote in this election.

“We have seen in recent days how the DUP want to silence nationalism by gerrymandering electoral boundaries and the best way to confront that is to get out and vote. The clear lesson of the last 14 months is that change is possible in this society if we demand it, campaign for it and vote for it. So it is crucial that the people of West Tyrone again get out and vote and demonstrate that they are not prepared to accept discrimination against anyone.”
