FOUR Tyrone drivers produced impressive drives on Saturday of last week to finish the demanding Carryduff Forklift Down Rally, which was won by Jonny Greer and Kirsty Riddick in their Citroen DS3 R5.
A full entry of 130 crews started the one day event based around Lisburn, Hillsborough and Castlewellan but only 84 reached the finish!
Of those to manage to complete the varied stages, which included a technical and tricky spectator stage at the Eikon Exhibition Centre as well as closed road stages like the famous Hamilton’s Folly, were the local quartet of Conor McCrossan, Amy Cox, Alan Atcheson and Andrew Bustard.
McCrossan, with Connor Murphy alongside him in their newly liveried Skoda Fabia S2000, managed to finish in 25th overall, which was good enough for second overall in the hugely competitive class eight.
“It was a good wee run,” beamed the KES Group proprietor. “It was well overdue but it was serious tough. It was sore on the cars but it was great to get second in the class and to finish it!”
Cox, meanwhile, was also competing in a Fabia S2000, with Caron McCormack navigating, produced another eye-catching drive by finshing 31st overall and 13th in class nine.
Castlederg duo, Atcheson and Bustard, also did well on Saturday, the former, assited by Thomas Wedlock, finishing 37th overall and seventh in class eight onboard his Ford Fiesta WRC, while the latter, alongside Mo Downey, earned second in class five and 50th spot overall onboard his MkII Ford Escort.
Bustard’s runner-up spot was far from straightforward though as an over-heating issue almost put paid to his involvement, while a time penalty also dented his hopes.
“I was lucky to get second!,” admitted the Top Gear Motors man. “The over-heating problems lost us 32 seconds over the first two stages, so I had to nurse it a bit and then we spent four minutes trying to fix it on the side of the road and that led to a 40 second penalty!”
While attempting to claw back some time, Bustard admitted that things were a little ‘hair-raising’ onboard the Escort at times, but that he ws happy to get to the finish and achieve the podium place.
