Drumquin’s McCay wins Sports Person of the year award

IRISH Hockey international Shirley McCay was named 2013 Senior Sports Person of the Year at last week’s 13th annual Omagh Sports Awards cermony in the Strule Arts Centre, organised by Omagh Sports Forum in association with Omagh District Council.

The local sporting community again came out in force for this popular annual function with over one hundred teams/ individuals nominated in the seven different categories.


And the stand-out recipient of the major prize was Shirley McCay, from Drumquin, whose commitment and dedication to hockey has paid dividends over the past number of years as she has risen through the ranks.

Welcoming the various guests and sports achievers, Conor McCrory, Sports Development & Recreation Officer for Omagh District Council, said that the night was all about coming together as a community in sport to recognize those individual and teams who have excelled in their chosen sports during 2013 through talent, commitment, sacrifice and teamwork and have achieved notable recognition at county, provincial, national and international levels.

He stated that Omagh Sports Forum has gave assistance to a wide range of clubs and sports individuals over the past 29 years which has made a huge difference locally and on the National and International sports stage.

“Omagh District Council through the dedicated endeavors of Omagh Sports Forum, are delighted that they have assisted so many and are determined to continue their good work up until March 2015, which will be the official end of ‘Omagh District Council’ in name. It is at this point that I would like to pay tribute to all the members of Omagh Sports Forum and Councillors and Officers of Omagh District Council for their dedication, foresight and assistance through out the past 29 years.”

Mr McCrory added: “It is a fitting tribute that you all have been invited to the Omagh Sports Awards, On the local sports arena 2013 we saw major local, western, county, provincial, national, international and world achievements in a range of sports represented by Omagh individuals and teams that are here tonight.

“All nominees in each category have been invited to the awards as recognition of their personal and team achievement during 2013.”
