Drumquin’s finest Shirley McCay reached an historic milestone on Saturday when she became the most capped Ireland ladies hockey player of all-time.
In helping Ireland claim gold with a resounding 5-0 victory over the Czech Republic at the Eurohockey Championships in Prague the former Omagh Ladies player won her 209th international cap.
That meant the former Schools’ Cup winner broke Nikki Symmons previous record of 208.
During the Euros Ulster Hockey coach McCay was at her inspirational best.
The Ulster Elks star weighed in with a number of crucial goals including one in the 4-0 semi-final triumph over Belarus.
Following Saturday’s victory the 27-year-old said she was proud to be the mosst capped Irish player.
“Females athletes are gaining more recognition than ever before and I am delighted to be able to create history,” she said.
