A GIFTED young Castlederg athlete has enjoyed a sensational record-breaking weekend.
On Saturday 16-year-old Sommer Lecky leaped 1.79 metres in the high jump while representing Ulster Schools in the Tailteann Games at Santry, Dublin.
Not only did that exceptional jump secure the gold medal in the inter-provincial games but it broke Ursula Fay’s long-standing record of some 32 years.
That phenomenal performance resulted in the Strabane Academy student being named the Female Athlete of the Meet.
Some 24 hours later the talented teenager became the first female from Tyrone woman to capture a national senior title when striking high jump gold at the Glo Health National Senior Athletics Championships, also held in the Morton Stadium, Santry,
Amazingly that was the Finn Valley girl’s senior debut.
