Barry McElduff elected as MP for West Tyrone

The new MP for West Tyrone, Barry McElduff.

SINN Fein’s Barry McElduff is the new Westminster MP for West Tyrone after polling over 22,000 votes.

The veteran politician from Carrickmore was more than 10,000 votes ahead of his nearest rival, Tom Buchanan of the DUP when counting was completed at Omagh Leisure Complex at 3.30am this morning (Friday).

He was the clear favourite to win the seat and there was never any doubt about the outcome as he stormed to victory on another dramatic night.

Speaking afterwards, Mr McElduff, said he would be strongly opposing Brexit and vowed to fight for special status for the north in any negotiations with the European Union.

He praised the party’s canvassers who he said had ‘covered hundreds of miles evening after evening’ to secure his success, and highlighted the efforts of the former MP, Pat Doherty, who announced at the start of the campaign that he was stepping down.
