Open casting sessions for new film set in Tyrone

A CASTING call has been made for local acting talent to star in a new film set to be shot in Tyrone.

Altamuskin author turned filmmaker Colin Broderick is preparing to return to his roots in the coming weeks to shoot his second feature film.

Following the success of his screen debut ‘Emerald City’, which he both wrote, directed and starred in, Broderick is coming back to where it all began with ‘A Bend in the River’.

Whereas ‘Emerald City’ followed the lives of a band of Irish immigrant construction workers struggling with life in modern day New York City, ‘A Bend in the River’ is the story of an Irish writer returning to Tyrone for the first time since he left 30 years previous to face the ghosts of his past.

Filming is set to take place at a series of locations around Co Tyrone in October, including in Sixmilecross and Dromore, but Broderick is flying in from New York this weekend to find a local star for his movie.

Open auditions will take place in the Strule Arts Centre this Saturday from 1pm to 4pm.

Speaking from his home in New York earlier this week, he told the Ulster Herald, “We need actors from 18 to 70, but we are looking for one female lead who is somewhere aged 35 to 45.

“There are actresses here who want the job, but I want somebody who looks and sounds like they have lived in Co Tyrone.

“The part is the main romantic lead, basically the girl who was left behind when the main character goes off to America with the promise of sending home money for her flight… Which he never does.”

The Tyrone native said he won’t be put off by people with little or no acting experience. A feature of ‘Emerald City’ was the number of screen debutantes, among them Broderick’s own brother Brendan, who proved to be a scene stealer.

“I have a really good idea of who I’m looking for and feel like I’ll know when they walk into the room. I feel like the right person is out there for the right role and I’m not as interested in limiting it to experienced actors as I am in finding the right person.”

‘A Bend in the River’ will feature some of the cast of ‘Emerald City’, including former Derry boxing pro John Duddy and John McConnell, one of the stand out performers of the film.

It will also take a similar semi-autobiographical line as Broderick’s screen debut.

“I feel that everything I do has some connection to me trying to figure out my own identity,” he reflected.

To audition for the film, come along to the Strule Arts Centre this Saturday from 1-4pm, where Colin Broderick and John McConnell will be conducting the casting session. A headshot and a brief biography are not essential, but are recommended.
