McHugh hat-trick secures promotion for St Davog’s

Hat-trick hero Ronan McHugh

ACE predator Ronan McHugh netted a hat-trick as Aghyaran blasted their way back into Division One with a convincing nine point play-off victory over neighbours Urney at Sigerson Park on Saturday afternoon.
McHugh’s triple strike (two with the feet and one with the fist) proved pivotal as the St Davog’s sealed an excellent league campaign on a high note, half-back Gary Leonard chipping in with the other major.
While the hat-trick hero inevitably grabbed the headlines, all round this was an efficient and at times enterprising performance from the victors, with Ronan McNamee, Gary Leonard, Ciaran McGlinchey and Michael Anderson all imposing their physical prowess and industry on proceedings, while keeper Brendan Gallen also chipped in with two stunning saves.
In contrast Urney will be deeply disappointed at the outcome as they slipped back into the Intermediate grade again following one season in the top flight.
They failed to match the intensity and passion they displayed six days earlier at the same venue when accounting for Strabane, with the black card dismissal of their attacking talisman Johnny Lafferty midway through the second period putting the cap on a forlorn afternoon.

Carrickmore, Errigal Ciaran and Greencastle all progressed to the last eight of the Donnelly Vauxhall Senior Championship
