Family killed in horror crash has Tyrone connections

Sion Mills native Doug Alexander and his wife Lily who were killed with their two sons in a crash in Wexford.

A TRAGIC road vehicle collision claimed the lives of four members of a US family who had close ties with Sion Mills.

Sion native Doug Alexander and wife Lily, both in their 70s, Doug Jnr (52) and Steven (48) were pronounced dead at the scene of a collision with a lorry in Wexford on Monday evening.

It is understood the family had rented a BMW hire car and were attending the funeral of Mrs Alexander’s sister when the collision with an articulated lorry occurred.

Explaining the family’s close connections to Sion, community representative Andy Patton said, “The circumstances surrounding this tragedy hit very close to home.

“The Alexander family is very well known and respected around the local area, with many relatives in Strabane, Newtownstewart and Sion Mills.

“The fact that these individuals were killed when visiting a funeral is especially devastating.”

Mr Patton explained that during his younger days Doug Snr was a well known local musician who played venues such as the Mellon Hotel, the Fir Trees and beyond.

“Older residents of our village will remember Dougie when he played in local bands here,” Mr Patton explained.

“He was an enthusiastic guitarist and vocalist.

“He then moved to America and settled in Illinois, but his presence left a lasting impression locally.

“Certainly, it is extremely hard to take in and I would like to extend condolences to relatives in both America and Tyrone during this hard time.

“The Alexander family is close knit and I am certain they will pull together.”
