KELAN Grant’s dreams of competing in the 2018 Enduro Word Series were turned into reality on Tuesday when Team Chain Reaction Cycles Mavic confirmed they had signed the Omagh man to race alongside reigning champion Sam Hill and Elliott Heap.
Belfast-based Kelan enjoyed a hugely successful season last year with wins at the Ard Rock Enduro, Tweedlove, Red Bull Fox Hunt and he’s the reigning Irish National Enduro champion, results which he hoped would propel him to the top level of the sport.
Fortunately, his four year association with bike brand Nukeproof, allied to that excellent 2017, helped him secure the ride he had been yearning for and with one of the top teams too, meaning he can concentrate full-time on the entire World Series for the first time.
“I’ll be doing the full series, the full job,” beamed the 24-year-old Omagh native.
“It’s a great relief to get it sorted, it takes a lot off my mind so I can focus on riding.
“It’s quite nice that it’s all coming together so I can put all my eggs in this basket, get my head down and concentrate on the bikes.”
Kelan is already looking forward to getting his EWS season up and running at the opening two rounds in March, which will take place in Columbia and Chile, after a team get together in February (at a destination to be announced) and possibly a warm-up race between times.
And while his main focus will be on ensuring he is in peak condition between now and the start of the campaign, he is eagerly anticipating being able to pick the brains of one of his new team-mates, who just so happens to be the reigning world champion.
“Sam Hill is a legend who has done so much for the sport in the last 10-15 years, so he’s a great team-mate to have and it’s a great honour, to be honest.
“It’s a massive opportunity,” he concluded.
