Omagh Credit Union would be interested in hearing from any of its members willing to offer a little of their time and energy to the board of directors. This is a voluntary, unpaid position, for which the only reward is that it would be a service to the community. The Credit Union, as most members will know, is operated on a daily basis by a professional team of full-time and part-time staff, consisting of a manager, assistant manager and personnel who offer members counter service and deal with a wide variety of administrative activities.
Besides them, there operates a board of directors which decides on policies, controls such matters as lending, controlling credit, managing insurance, working on investment of our funds, risk measurement, compliance and promotion and development. There are also three members of the board who carry out the duties of chairperson, secretary and treasurer. It is worth pointing out that, despite these individual duties, there is a system of corporate governance whereby each member of the board is equally responsible for anyone of the above activities as any other member.
Hence monthly meetings consist of lively, interesting and fruitful debate from which emerges decisions which, to date have led to an increasingly successful Credit Union. A team of supervisors act in the role of ensuring that any decisions taken are correct and oversee that activities are proper and comply with regulation, it is, in a sense, the eyes and ears of the Credit Union. Such is the importance of this board, that without it Omagh Credit Union would cease to exist, with the resultant loss to the community of what has been, over the years, a vital and highly necessary asset to the community.
