MLA resignation rumour sparked by social media glitch

WEST Tyrone MLA Declan McAleer says rumours of his resignation from Sinn Féin are the result of a “technical issue” on social media.

Speculation was rife about a departure earlier this week when the Loughmacrory politician’s Facebook page stated that he had left his job as an Assembly member with the party.

Further fuel had been added to the fire when the page also described him as ‘former MLA’ at Sinn Féin.

However, the truth turned out to be a lot less sensational for Mr McAleer, who is a former Omagh councillor.

“It had been six years since my appointment as an MLA and for some reason the settings only lasted for that length of time,” he said.

“The settings were then changed automatically by Facebook. But I’m still a fully-fledged member of Sinn Féin.

“I changed the settings again after noticing the mistake but they could only be made for two years.

“So, the same thing might happen again in 2020.”
