THERE will be some extra jostling for space in the trophy cabinet at Omagh Lawn Tennis Club after some incredible performances by members at the West of Ulster Championships, which took place in Enniskillen from May 13-19.
Top of the heap after the weekend action were local A players Nikki Hawkes and David Ward, who both won their respective singles finals, with David fending off No. 1 seed Matthew McGann in a tight final to win 7-6 7-6 and bring the men’s spoils home to Omagh. Meanwhile Nikki came up against Aoifin Shorten, demonstrating excellent form to secure a convincing 6-3 6-3 victory in the A Ladies’ Final.
The last time the Omagh pair snagged a simultaneous Open victory was in 2012 at Irvinestown, making the weekend’s reprisal was well worth the wait! Both players were delighted with their wins and expressed thanks to their families for their unfailing support as well as both clubs and also the event sponsors for a fantastic tournament.
And the Omagh successes didn’t end there – Nikki was also victorious in the A Ladies’ Doubles alongside Enniskillen partner Louise McGann, while Omagh’s Andy Moore partnered with Enniskillen’s Matthew McGann to scoop the A Men’s Doubles title.
In the B Ladies’ Singles, Omagh’s Veronica Hawkes also reached the final but had to settle for the runner-up prize on the day, while club mates Pauline McAleer and Valerie McKinley also lost out in the B Ladies Doubles Finals after yet another great match.
The local club was also represented in the C Men’s Doubles Final where Omagh’s Sean O’Neill partnered with Dungannon’s William McCreedy, although the pair had to settle for the runner-up spot after a valiant display on Sunday.
Omagh LTC would like to congratulate all members who took part in the tournament and extend its gratitude to Enniskillen Tennis Club for all their hard work in putting on an excellent event.
