Tyrone advance with four-point win over plucky Longford

Tyrone 2-15

Longford 1-14

TYRONE ensured their name will be in the hat for Monday’s round three qualifier draw with a more comfortable than it sounds 2-15 to 1-14 win over Longford.

The match started fairly evenly but two Cathal McShane goals knocked the wind out of the underdog’s sails as Tyrone opened up a 2-4 to 0-3 lead by the 16th minute

Longford keeper Paddy Collum didn’t exactly cover himself in glory for either major, with the first having the air of an own-goal about it as the ball deflected off himself and into the back of the net.

In the second case, Michael Cassidy’s long ball was latched onto by McShane who punched the ball to the net with the goalkeeper finding himself wrong-footed by the move.

At the other end of the pitch the Tyrone defence was well on top albeit a series of soft frees kept Longford still somewhat in contention at half-time with the scoreboard reading 2-7 to 0-5 in the Red Hands’ favour.

The game fizzled out in the second-half, however, with Tyrone keeping the scoreboard ticking over with Peter Harte scoring a number of frees in front of an attendance of 4162 at Pearse Park, while sub Ben McDonnell kicked two nice points from play.

Harte finished his game with nine points, seven from frees, but will be disappointed to be black carded for the second game in a row for an innocuous looking challenge.

To their credit Longford finished strongly, scoring 1-3 without reply in the final minutes, but it was still a case of job done from a Tyrone perspective.
