CASTLEDERG came to a standstill on Monday afternoon as the town bade a fond farewell to one of its favourite sons.
Samuel George (Sammy) Walls, late of Main Street, Castlederg, passed away peacefully at Altnagelvin Hospital on Friday afternoon. He was 86-years-old.
The well-known and widely-respected publican, who owned the Derg Arms, had been at the heart of his hometown’s community for decades.
Mr Walls, a father-of-seven, was involved in a wide range of local organisations over the years, including Derg Parish Church, Killen Rangers Football Club, Castlederg Keep Fit Club and Castlederg Silver Band.
He was also a founding member of the Castlederg Enterprise and Development Association.
As a mark of respect, businesses in the town centre closed on Monday as his funeral procession made its way towards Derg Parish Church. Present and former staff carried his coffin as the procession paused for a moment outside the Derg Arms.
Rev Peter Ferguson, who presided over the funeral service, referred to his close friend as “Mr Castlederg”.
